About Margaret G. Barksdale

Barksdale Elementary opened in 1978 and was initially called New Elementary School and housed at the J.P. Carr School  before the campus on Oglesby Bridge Road was built. The Board of Education solicited name ideas from the community and the school was named after beloved English teacher Margaret G. Barksdale (1897-1983). When Barksdale Elementary School moved into its current location in 1980, a dedication ceremony was held and attended by Mrs. Barksdale. She taught for 36 years at the Conyers High School, where the RCPS offices on North Main Street are currently located, and was a bastion of her community. Her service wasn’t limited to her teaching position. The Peabody Teacher’s College graduate was also very active in the Conyers Civic League and Conyers Presbyterian Church. She was a founding member of the Rockdale Historical Society and helped to pen the key volume, “History of Rockdale County.” She was the granddaughter of Professor R. A. Guinn, daughter of Nancy Graham Guinn, and mother of A. R. (Gus) Barksdale.
